an admonition to, quote, back off, came from paula broadwell. while combing through broadwell's e-mails they came upon david petraeus. let's stop it here and bring in suzanne -- suzanne kelly in washington, our intelligence correspondent. suzanne, a lot of ground to cover here. we have this video that has surfaced of paula broadwell, last month, speaking at the university of denver and she's speaking here as david petraeus' biographer about the deadly attack on the u.s. consulate in benghazi, libya. let's take a listen. >> i don't know if a lot of you heard this, but the cia an annex had taken a couple prisoner and they think the attack on the consulate was an attempt to get the prisoners back. that's still being vetted. >> where did she hear that? did it come from david petraeus and do we know if her claim was true, the cia was holding captives inside a consular annex in benghazi? >> right, ted. this raises serious issues. she clearly said in the video the information she was sharing on libya and the cia holding prisoners there hadn't been vetted. so that means she is sharing som
. the petraeus family friend who unwittingly exposed his affair with paula broadwell. right now general allen's nomination to be the next nato supreme commander in europe is on hold. >>> a small plane went down tuesday after takeoff in jackson, mississippi, slamming into a house and killing all three people onboard. a person inside the house was injured in the crash as well. the plane's owner says all three men onboard the piper pa-32 were pilots heading to an faa safety conference in re monday, mississippi, when the plane went down. >>> and the man who said he had a sexual relationship with kevin clash is now changing his story. he said he had a relationship with clash when he was 16 years old now. through his attorney the accuser says it was an adult consensual relationship. >>> stephen colbert's super pack is now closed. that was posted online by the federal commission. it may have started as a joke but the super pac raked in more than $2 million. he used some of the money to pay for the funny campaign ads during the republican primaries during his ill-fated attempt to be the president of
. the fbi uncovered evidence of an affair between petraeus and his biographer paula broadwell, after she allegedly sent harassing e-mails to another woman she jealously thought was too close to petraeus. new york congressman peter king says there are far more questions than answers. >> this seems to have been going on for several months. yet now it appears that they're saying that the fbi didn't realize until election day that general petraeus was involved. it just doesn't add up. and you've got this type of investigation, the fbi investigating e-mails, the e-mails leading to the cia director, and it's taking four months to find out that the cia director was involved. >> cnn's barbara starr is following this developing story, she's live at the pentagon for us. good morning. tell us, what is the status of the investigation right now? >> well, good morning, alina. "the new york times" is now reporting this morning that the investigation actually began some months ago. but, again, the questions continue to mount. it wasn't until election night that the director of national intelligence, jam
with you. what can you tell us about this probe with paula broadwell. what would the fbi have been looking for, and do we know how long this was going on for? >> we don't know how long it was going on, but just the -- so they're the ones that would look into classification, they look into hold clearances. are they doing what they need to be doing to make sure that information stays safe. is there any opportunity that that information could be exploited by either a spy or anyone else who shouldn't have access to that information. so the fact they were the ones looking into this tells us they were concerned about some e-mail things. let's back up for just a moment. this was a tip given that there was a relationship going on between the two, so they would have dug into things like e-male e-mails and text and see things like that. if it turns out to be paula, they would be looking at communications between the two over the years, and especially since, as you mentioned, general david petraeus has taken over the directorship of the cia which happened in september of last year. anderson? >> and s
on again, my discussions with him, he has not provided paula broadwell or anyone with information, classified information that they shouldn't have. >> has he had any conversation or contact with paula broadwell in the last few days? >> last few days, i'm not aware of any. she, up until everything that came out with the news, i'm sure she was still working on her dissertation. there was some potential contact back and forth over a little bit of time about that. you have to imagine somebody who is doing their dissertation is not going to just give up that entire body of work and research very easily. >> what about jill kelley? how do you describe david petraeus' relationship with her? >> i think very simply as close personal friends of not only david petraeus but of his wife, holly, as well. they met the kelleys not too long after they arrived at tampa, mcdill air force base, home of u.s. central command, where he became the commander october 31st, 2008. my understanding is that the kelleys hosted a dinner not too long after they arrived and took command to start introducing him to
